Speech Contest Scheduled for March 17

We are again sponsoring a Japanese language Speech and Recitation Contest on March 17 of this year. The topic of the speeches is:

Ganbaro Nippon - Spirit from Silicon Valley”.

We join the Spirit of Okayama to address the many challenges occuring in Japan, from the disaster recovery, to employment, to new government, to regional international stresses.

Also. again this year we are expecting participation of the Consuls from the San Francisco Japanese Consulate [information link].

Youth may deliver speeches and/or recite them from papers that they write.
There is a small entry fee to allow us to cover costs of this event.

Seeking Intern Volunteers

We have some jobs that would be beneficial to the Sister City organization and good community service for high school or college students. Tasks include assisting with data base creation for cultural videos, working with a team that is moving historical information to computer storage, working with a team that is documenting the creation of the Japanese Friendship Garden and the important contributions by the Japanese-American people of the region. It may also involve adding material to this web site or our YouTube page.

As a reminder of the assignment for the participants of the recent trip to Japan, kindly submit your essays about your experience in Hiroshima to Bob Green at email: secretary@sj-okayama.org

We will be having our ending meeting later this summer. We are expecting it to be on August 19 (Sunday) at San Jose’s Kelly Park. The board of directors has authorized some expenditure to be able to provide food (maybe barbecue?). It wll be held in the early afternoon. Additional information will be sent to you as the date approaches.

Note: Certificates will be presented to attendees that have completed their assignment at this last get-together before the 2012-13 school year.

By the way, did we say “Good Job” to the recent HS graduates? It is a big accomplishment in your life as you move on to the next challenge.

Youth Ambassadors return from Japan

After a 9 hour red-eye from Tokyo, late Thursday afternoon the high school group has returned from their trip to Okayama and other parts of Western Japan. The author is still groggy from accompanying them (or at least being on the same midnight flight from Tokyo International Airport at Haneda field).

To avoid embarrassment from a fuzzy mind, this post will be updated as material is placed on the Youth page. The pictures here are from the meeting in the Okayama Mayor’s office and the youth and parents present on the day leaving for Japan. We think the trip went well.

2011 Travel to Japan Postponed in Consideration of the Japanese National Crisis

The committe for the 2011 Trip to Okayama and other parts of Japan has issued a notice to applicants and their families that the trip will not be held in June of this year. The essays will still be judged and the applicants are being asked to participate in a project to thank the Japan side for their invitation and preparations. We held a meeting Saturday April 9 with quite a few in attendance.

Our explanation is that, although the travel agency worked very close with us to plan alternative destinations in Western Japan, the feedback we have gotten from Japan is that the whole nation is preoccupied with helping those whose lives have been very badly affected. We don’t want to put them to the trouble of hosting us at this time.

Current applicants will be advised of the next trip to be planned and any application fee at that time will be waived for them. If you have questions, please contact the Secretary.
